More? 2005-08 I restored a duplexed American Craftman
style bungalow, also referred to as "arts and
crafts". This style originated with Gustav Stickley (1858-1942) and plans were published in his
magazine The Craftsman. My brother lives upstairs and until I rescued the hosue from foreclosure he owned it for 30 years! The features of this style include low rooflines with over-hanging eaves; exposed
structural elements as brackets and rafters; enclosed porch beneath an extended roof; interior spaces featuring
built-ins as benches, cabinetry, fireplaces; beamed ceilings and extensive simplicity of woodwork. The house was duplexed sometime
during the late 1940's, and now I have completed restoration of both up and down units.
Here is the latest
in 2010: My neighbor of 30 years passed in August 2009 and I promised her I would
place her ashes, and those of her several cats, near her favorite shrub
rose. So I bought her house, cut down trees in the lot, brought in boulders,
and created her new resting space. Hope you like it Lorraine!
La Maison Jaune (the Yellow House) now is getting new refinished floors and coats of paint. But first a new landscaping job in its south lot. What fun!
In the summer of 1999, I decided to reside and reroof the garage to "mimic" the house. I decided it would also be a good time to buld a small garden house out from its south side.
I scavenged around and found all the windows including the bay, used up some spare timber, and insulated everything. It was fun to take the project from start to finish with my own crude skills.
I think you will agree that the finished project turned out quite well
though
here
again there is more work to be done: gardening in winter!
Of
course it has its rewards when you step inside and get refreshing green
smells! But of course there are other rewards as well:
