Building the giant Czech puppets:  part 2
The same process is followed creating the hands.  |
For the fingers, strips of cardboard are wrapped
with the newspaper to form the hand
when attached to the bunch that forms the palm, etc.

In the background, the face has dried,
and then lifted off of its clay foundation.
The clay can then be repurposed or discarded.

Painting! with an acrylic paint...
Now boards are attached with screws
to the back of the head, and then a pole
is mounted on the boards.

The pole is standard white PVC,
available at building supply stores.

It is slippery so a cross piece where held by the puppeteers is handy.

Jitka has a pretty face...
Now it is time for the costumes.
We modeled ours on composite "kroi" or native costumes of areas of the Czech Republic,
though mostly from a Moravian model.
Our seamstresses pictured are Doreen and Louise.
with Laurie working on some detail work...
and so we completed two puppets,
Jarda and Jitka, for the dedication...
