I have circumnavigated the world
once,
and journeyed to all of the continents except
"the cold one." I began my travels with the Peace Corps of the USA
in 1968. I was a small city boy who had not traveled before.
My philosophy about travel is that I
try to study
the language of an area/country before
visiting,
and that I visit more than "several days" in
one location
to get a sense of place, to know the
people,
that they may also get to know me.
Travel is a reciprocating experience.

Images of travels from 1968 onwards.
A trip with an old high school friend and my first trip since returning from a stint in the Peace Corps in West Africa. We met in London, but then I proceded to Cardiff and a tour through Wales.

Just a "spring" bread with an old high school friend.
You won't find me in these photos... but you will find friends, colleagues, and even a stranger. I attended the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education's WebNet 99 - World Conference on the WWW and Internet in Honolulu. I stayed in Lanikai on the windward side of the island at a lovely Bed & Breakfast, a block off of the beach with a friend --with flower in the photo. Favorite memory: sunrise walks on the beach, riding with friends around the island, each other.
A trip of a lifetime--all in Beijing. The two weeks were plenty to visit friends, a local park, temples, palaces, Tiananmen Square, the summer palace, the Peking Opera, Peking University, the University of International Business and Economics (my hosts), the Great Wall, and to just walk the streets and be part of the scene. Of course, my travel is not a one way street, and I enjoyed being known as well as knowing.
The series of seven montages of photos were taken with a digital camera on my trip to Beijing November 1999. I went both for my "summer" vacation as well as to pursue two projects. I furthered work on the Chinese translations of "Study Guides" and continued research on Gypsy/Roma immigration into China in the 12th Century, about the same time they emigrated out of northwestern India into Eastern Europe.

The occasion was a conference, the SSGRR - Scuola Superiore Guglielmo Reiss Romoli, L'Aquila, Italy, July 17 - August 6, 2003. It was one of the hotest summers on record in Europe, I was a featured co-presenter at the conference and co-authored an article "A Learning Community Assembles at a (technology) Conference" about it in my column "Learning by Design" in Tech Trends, magazine of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology. Aside from the amazing sites in Rome, the trip began with a stay at a hilltop village resort without air conditioning but with a pool and a find restaurant. L'Aquila would suffer a horrible earthquake in 2009. The Tuscany program is one of my best.

Argentina: Buenos
Aires, Iguazu, Misiones Jesuíticas
Uruguay: Montevideo, Colonia
March 3 - 23, 2005
One Flash tour covers Buenos Aires and the other Iguazu Falls and Misiones Jesuíticas in Argentina, Montevideo and Colonia in Uruguay.
As part of a study program Design Intensive/DHA 5196 between the School of Design, University of Minnestoa and the School of Architecture, Universidad de Buenos Aires I also toured the Capital Federal, San Telmo, Recoleta, the fruit market of Tigre, the city center, tango bars & events, Puerto Madero, and stayed at my friend's house in Belgrano. I traveled by subte (subway), taxi, and as a passenger in my friend's car! I flew to Iguazu to wander the town and falls, and toured the Misiones Jesuíticas (a world heritage site). I took the Buquebus across the Río de la Plata/River Plate, a rather strange name for what is translated in Spanish as the River of Silver. In Uruguay I toured Montevideo that got its name from Hill/Monte + Number Six/VI + deo (deo = from east to west, a sailing direction). I dropped down to Colonia, another world heritage site. Then I went home.
